The BMW 3.0 CS is one of the most iconic designs celebrating the celebrated Bayerische Motoren Werke, and as such are highly coveted by collectors. Finding an example that has been as well preserved and maintained as this car has is certainly a rare find.

This 1973 BMW 3.0CS is currently on its second owner and has been meticulously cared for over the years, not only by the current owner but also the businesses and individuals that have had the pleasure of servicing it. The vehicle is finished in a Chamonix White, on a set of iconic Alpina wheels, with a beautiful red leather interior featuring wood trim, upgraded Recaro seats with 3 point harnesses, and showing just over 91,000 miles on the clock. This classic has been lusted after, obtained, and restored with a track purpose in mind and now it is time to let it go for another to enjoy. The E9 does come with all original parts, including the matching numbered engine, and stacks of records. You’ll never find a BMW 3.0CS that shows as well both on, and off, the track like this one does.

This 1973 BMW 3.0CS spent most of its early years in the small town of Pojoaque, north of Santa Fe, New Mexico. The current owner would often spot the vehicle’s timeless clean lines in its Chamonix white color and its stunning red leather interior while driving around before he owned it. In the Spring of 2006, after moving to Idaho, he came across the same vehicle for sale and shortly thereafter became it’s second owner.

With the E9 known for being prone to rust, the first owner did his best to prevent rust from forming and did not drive the BMW throughout the Winter months. As with any car though, a little rust will not come as a surprise. This 1973 3.0CS has undergone extensive rust removal performed by the esteemed Glenn Vaughn Restoration. Both visual and written documents are included demonstrating their exceptional attention to detail.

The BMW also spent time getting it’s build done by Mark Treft at Marks Automotive in Post Falls, Idaho. The current owner had built a trusted relationship with Mark over the years from Mark servicing many of his previously owned bespoke vehicles. Mark’s remarkable ability tends to fly under the radar in the small town, but his caliber and pedigree make him one of the best in the industry.

Mark Treft worked directly with Glenn Vaughn Restoration when the E9 was sent over to their shop. It was strongly advocated by the shop that the owner change the original color of the BMW, Chamonix, to something brighter but still period correct. Knowing the car still has its original color plate affixed, he decided against it and preserve the Chamonix color.

The 1973 BMW 3.0CS build was geared towards the direction of wanting fast lap times in a competitive race car, but at the end of the day also obtaining best of show on the street. All paperwork from Glenn Vaughn Restoration for the build is included. Due to the respectable nature of the owner’s relationship with Mark, no build paperwork had been produced from Mark’s Automotive.

This E9 has had all rust removed by Glenn Vaughn Restoration. It features a CSL style front air dam with the unfavorable front bumper deleted. Chrome trim accents the exterior and is in amazing condition as well as the chrome of the rear bumper. The emblems show no signs of fading. The only points of concern seen are a paint chip on top of the passenger rear quarter panel and some light scratches on the chrome trim above the fuel door.

The exterior trim is completely intact and presents extremely well. From the windshield trim surrounds, to the grills, and body trim to the clean glass everything is in very good condition.

Sitting on a set of iconic Alpina 17” wheels wrapped in 215/40/17 Dunlop Direzza ZII tires. The tires have date codes of 2014. Braking was upgraded with front Wilwood calipers and drilled rotors. All original parts are included.

Immaculate, a word we would use to describe the interior of this 3.0 CS. Recaro reclinable bucket seats make up the front row in red alcantara and black leather, with lap harnesses to keep you planted. A roll cage and full harnesses were removed. The headliner is perforated white leather, and the only white leather you’ll find inside. The dash is black with a chestnut-colored wood trim, there are two areas of concern on the dash itself and the wood trim is also showing wear, which is pictured in our detailed Flickr photo album. All of the gauges work, including the clock, with the mileage showing just over 91,000, which is accurate. The A/C and radio have been removed. A stunning red leather makes up the door panels, which show some wear, and rear seating with a black rear shelf. The rear seats were completed in 2019. The steering wheel has been swapped out for a Momo, fitting the track-inspired build list well. The carpeting is all original and in surprisingly good shape. The trunk has all it’s original pieces as well as the right side two-compartment holder. Last to note, and one of the greatest finds, the tools are all original. All original parts are included.

The motor was sourced and built by Metric Mechanic and received high compression, more lift and duration on the camshaft, the cylinder head was ported, as well as manifolds to the triple Weber DCOE 45mm carbs were also hand ported. The installation of the motor was performed by Mark Treft. The front end is from a latter year 3-series and the 5-speed manual transmission is from a BMW M5. A custom exhaust by Marks Automotive was also fabricated for the E9. The sound of the motor and pitch of its exhaust speaks well to its build. The carbs are currently set up for 2500 ft, so it may need re-tuned depending on final destination. Backfire is normal, even in a proper tune, but it can be calmed down if desired by installing another muffler. The original motor is included in a metal crate. All original parts are included.

As stated by the owner, “Never in your wildest dreams have you imagined anyone so into a subject such as automotive lighting,” when referring to Daniel Stern Lighting. Daniel Stern performed all the LED upgrades on the E9, which are his own design including the period-correct Marchal Cat Eye headlamps. Looking at the car from a distance, you’ll understand why they’re referred to as cat eyes. The high beams are 100-watt bulbs with a proper glass, which was calculated to night viewing on desert roads.

The wiring was properly upgraded at Sports Car Garage in Palm Desert, CA. “In a two-car garage, a scene out of Italy,” when describing the shop.

The E9 rides incredibly smooth on the street but it is ready for some backroad cornering. A set of coilovers were installed on the vehicle to increase track handling. All original parts are included.

Extensive documentation and paperwork are included. The original window sticker and manuals are included as well as a second key.
